Conclave August 1978

The 1978 conclave took place in Rome from August 25 to August 26, 1978 . In the conclave was Patriarch of Venice , Cardinal Albino Luciani as Pope John Paul I voted. It took just under a day for his election until the new Pope appeared for the first time on the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica on the evening of August 26 at around 7:00 p.m. CEST . He was the successor to Pope Paul VI. In this conclave, the age limit for cardinals introduced in 1970 (under 80 years of age at the beginning of the sedis vacancy ) applied for the first time .

Due to illness, the American Cardinal John Joseph Wright , the Archbishop of Bombay, Valerian Gracias , and the Polish Curia Cardinal Bolesław Filipiak were absent from the conclave . 15 other cardinals did not take part in the conclave because they were already over 80 years old.
