Agnelo Cardinal Rossi (born May 4, 1913 in Joaquim Egidio , Brazil ; † May 21, 1995 in Indaiatuba ) was a Brazilian clergyman, Archbishop of Ribeirão Preto and São Paulo and later Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church . From 1986 to 1993 he was Dean of the College of Cardinals .

Agnelo Rossi studied in Campinas, São Paulo and Rome the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . In Rome he was a seminarian at the Pontifical Brazilian College of Pius . He received the in Rome on March 27, 1937 sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked for a year as private secretary for the Bishop of Campinas before taking up a position as a lecturer at the seminary of São Paulo. From 1943 to 1956 he was vice-rector of the Faculty of Economics in Campinas, vice- rector of the university there , editor of a newspaper and canon of the local cathedral .

On March 5, 1956, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Bishop of Barra do Paraí . He was ordained episcopate on April 15th of the same year by the Bishop of Campinas, Paulo de Tarso Campos ; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Hélder Câmara , Auxiliary Bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro , and Vicente Angelo José Marchetti Zioni , Auxiliary Bishop in São Paulo.

On September 6, 1962, Pope John XXIII. the management of the Archdiocese of Ribeirão Preto . From 1962 to 1965, Agnelo Rossi took part in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father. From 1963 to 1970 he was President of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on November 1, 1964 Archbishop of São Paulo. A few months later, on February 22, 1965, he accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Gran Madre di Dio in the college of cardinals . On October 22, 1970, he made him Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . Pope John Paul II confirmed Agnelo Rossi as prefect and entrusted him with numerous administrative and representative tasks. In 1984 Agnelo Rossi resigned from the post of Cardinal Prefect and became President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See, which he chaired until 1989. On December 19, 1986, Agnelo Rossi became Cardinal Bishop of Ostia and Cardinal Dean . He held this position until his resignation on May 31, 1993. In the same year Cardinal Rossi returned to his native Brazil and died of cancer on May 21, 1995. He was buried in the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadelupe , which he helped build.
