Peterlee is a so-called new town in County Durham in the north-east of England and consists of several united localities. These new towns were founded to relieve urban conurbations after the Second World War. The town was named after a locally known miner, Peter Lee , in 1948. The population initially consisted mainly of miners. The city has 30,093 inhabitants (as of 2001) and belongs to the Unitary Authority County Durham .

Peterlee differs from other New Town foundations, such as Welwyn Garden City , in that it was applied for at the express request of the residents by their political representative ( Member of Parliament ) and not initiated by the government.

A deputation from the Easington district, consisting mainly of miners, met with the Minister of Town and Country Planning , John Silkin , after the Second World War , and managed to get the motion to merge several villages in the District to a city was endorsed and implemented. The population of the new city was around 30,000 people.

Since 1981 there has been a town partnership with the town of Nordenham on the Lower Weser, which is about the same size . Both public and private meetings take place regularly. A town partnership with the town of Baesweiler - northern district of Aachen - Germany has existed since 1975. Here, too, both public and private meetings take place regularly.

economy

Peterlee's development has been subject to various changes in recent years. So a new bus station was built and a shopping center that was named Castle Dene Shopping Center . An ASDA supermarket was opened in November 2001 and from October 2009 the expansion to include three more supermarkets was hotly debated. The Durham County Council then finally approved the planning of a supermarket for the Tesco group and another supermarket in Castle Dene in June 2011 . They are intended to give residents in Peterlee and the surrounding villages more choice after Safeway closed in 2005 and ASDA was the only remaining large supermarket.
