Safeway, Inc is the third largest retailer in the United States and is headquartered in Pleasanton , California . The company was listed on the S&P 500 stock index and had 2008 sales of $ 44.1 billion. Safeway was founded in 1915.
In March 2014, it became known that the US financial investor Cerberus Capital Management wanted to take over Safeway in the course of the year and merge it with the retail chain Albertsons , which it already owned ; this was completed in early 2015.
