Albertsons LLC is a US supermarket chain headquartered in Boise , Idaho . Albertsons is the third largest private company in the United States , according to Forbes .

The company was founded in 1939 by Joe Albertson and today has 2,400 locations and 250,000 employees (as of 2014). Cerberus Capital Management , which took over Albertsons with CVS Pharmacy and Supervalu in 2016, bought Safeway in March 2014 , adding 1,331 locations to the company. The supermarkets operate under different names (subsidiary groups) in 29 states. In the first quarter of 2013 Supervalu sold its stake in Albertsons and several other subsidiary chains to Cerberus.
