Boise [ ˈbɔɪsi ] (also Boise City ) is the capital of the US state Idaho and also the seat of the county seat of Ada County . It lies to the west of the Snake River Plain .
The name comes from the French ( boisé - 'wooded'), accordingly the inhabitants also refer to their city as the "city of trees" .
geography
Boise is located in southwest Idaho, about 65 km east of the Oregon state line and about 175 km north of the Nevada state line . The center of the city is at an altitude of 824 m . Boise is part of the Treasure Valley .
Most of the urban area is on a wide plain that rises to the west. In the northeast rise mountains that line from the extreme southeast corner of the city limits to Eagle . About 55 km southwest of Boise and 42 km southwest of Nampa are the Owyhee Mountains in neighboring Owyhee County .
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 207.3 km 2 , of which 205.5 km 2 is land and 1.8 km 2 is water. The urban area is drained by the Boise River .

After the recession in California, Boise grew strongly due to migrant West Coast residents. In 1990 the city had around 126,000 inhabitants, in 1995 already 160,000 inhabitants, in 2005 already 190,000 inhabitants and in 2010 over 205,000 inhabitants. The proportion of moving families with children is comparatively high, so that the average age of Boise is only 33 years. 92.15% of the population are white, approx. 4.5% Hispanics . The proportion of African Americans is 0.77%. The average household income for the city is 42,432 US dollars , the per capita income 22,696 US dollars. The unemployment rate was 3.3% in February 2019 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Economy and Transport
Boise experienced a steady economic boom in the years after the turn of the millennium, with high growth rates and low unemployment. In particular, the city has developed into a commercial and educational center. Boise is the headquarters of electronics company Micron Technology , supermarket chains Albertsons and WinCo Foods, and paper company Boise Cascade Corp. The conglomerate Morrison-Knudsen had its headquarters in Boise until its bankruptcy and subsequent takeover in 1996. The successor company MotivePower Industries remained at the local location. Boise is connected to the national air transport network via Boise Airport .
education
The city is home to Idaho's largest university , Boise State University with around 18,000 students. The university's sports teams are called the Broncos . There are four state high schools in Boise that are vying for prestige, including high school sports such as American football and basketball. The oldest is Boise High School, followed by Borah High and Capital High. The youngest is Timberline High School. There is also the Catholic private school Bishop Kelly High School and the Cole Valley Christian High School. Boise is the seat of the Diocese of Boise .

Boise is known for its many recreational and sporting options, such as the Boise Greenbelt, an extensive recreational area that stretches along the riverbanks, and the Rock Climbing Center, considered one of the best in the western United States by rock climbers .
The Boise Philharmonic Orchestra , founded around 1885, plays symphony concerts, chamber concerts, family and children's concerts for over 50,000 listeners every year.
Sports
The Idaho Steelheads are a professional ice hockey team from Boise and play in the ECHL . The Idaho Stampede represented Boise in basketball in the NBA Development League . The Boise Hawks play minor league baseball as a farm team for the Chicago Cubs .
