Montpelier is a city in Bear Lake County in the US state of Idaho . In 2000 the place had 2785 inhabitants. It is the largest settlement in Bear Lake Valley , an agricultural area north of Bear Lake in southeast Idaho on the border with Utah . The first settlers to settle in 1863 were Mormons on the Oregon Trail .
history
Like most places in the western United States, the name of Montpelier has changed several times. The Oregon Trail settlers knew the place as Clover Creek and later the name Belmont was used until Brigham Young , one of the founders of Mormonism, named the place after his birthplace in Vermont . In 1892 a railway line was led to Montpelier and a train station existed in Montpelier until 1972.
In 1896, Montpelier was the scene of a bank robbery by Butch Cassidy , Elzy Lay and Bob Meeks , who thereby get money and thus be able to raise bail for gang member Matt Warner.

The population was 96.70% White , 0.61% Native American , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 1.97% said they were of other races , and 0.68% said two or more races. 3.81% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of Montpelier were distributed to 1012 households out of which 38.4% had children under the age of 18. 58.7% of households are married, 8.8% had a female head of the household without a husband and 29.3% did not form families. 26.6% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 13.9% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.31 people.
