Bear Lake County is a county in the state of Idaho in the United States . The county seat is Paris .

The county is located in the southeastern corner of Idaho, borders Wyoming to the east and Utah to the south and has an area of ​​2,718 square kilometers, of which 202 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Caribou County , Lincoln County in Wyoming, Rich County in Utah, and Franklin County .

history

Bear Lake County was formed on January 5, 1875 from parts of Oneida County. It was named after Bear Lake , a nearby lake.

The first settlers were smaller Shoshone tribes . The first whites were probably some trappers and scouts who explored the area in 1818. In 1819 Donald McKenzie camped by a lake and named it Black Bear Lake because of the many black bears that could be found there .

In 1836 a small mission to Christianize the Indians was set up and from 1841 the Oregon Trail ran through this area. In 1863, Brigham Young , second president and prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, sent the first Mormons to settle here.

92 buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .

As of the 2000 census , Bear Lake County's 6,411 people lived in 2,259 households and 1,710 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.66 percent white, 0.09 percent African American, 0.53 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.51 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.4 percent of the population.

The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.7 men.

The median household income was 32,162 USD , and the median income for a family 38,351 USD. Males had a median income of $ 33,958 versus $ 17,829 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,592. 7.1 percent of families and 9.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
