Benewah County is a county in the state of Idaho in the United States . The county seat is St. Maries .

The county is located in northwest Idaho, borders Washington to the west and has an area of 2030 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Kootenai Counties , Shoshone Counties , Latah Counties , and Whitman Counties and Spokane Counties in Washington.
history
Benewah County was formed on January 23, 1915 from parts of Kootenai County. It was named after a chief of the Coeur d'Alene .

As of the 2000 census , Benewah County had 9,171 people in 3,580 households and 2,538 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.66 percent white, 0.12 percent African American, 8.94 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.25 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.55 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,580 households, 31.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.4 percent of them were married couples living together. 7.7 percent were single mothers and 29.1 percent were non-families. 24.0 percent were single households and 10.4 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
26.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 25.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.6 percent between 45 and 64 years. 14.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 104.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 101.1 men.
The median household income was 31,517 USD , and the median income for a family 36,000 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,097 versus $ 20,288 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,285. 10.5 percent of families and 14.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
