Gem County is a county in the state of Idaho ( United States ). The county seat is in Emmett .

The county is located in western Idaho, about 35 kilometers from Oregon and has an area of 1,465 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Adams County , Valley County , Boise County , Ada County , Canyon County , Payette County, and Washington County . To the south, the county juts out into the Snake River Plain .

According to the 2000 census , Gem County had 15,181 people. 199 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 5,539 households and 4,176 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.79 percent white, 0.73 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.07 percent African American, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.83 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 6.92 percent of the population.

Of the 5,539 households, 34.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 63.4 percent of them were married couples living together. 8.4 percent were single mothers and 24.6 percent were non-families. 20.8 percent were single households and 9.9 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.12.

28.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years. 15.6 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 96.7 men.

The median household income was 34,460 USD , and the median income for a family 40,195 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,036 versus $ 20,755 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,340. 11.6 percent of families and 13.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
