Lemhi County is a county in the state of Idaho in the United States . The county seat is Salmon .

The county is located in north-central Idaho, borders Montana to both the north and northeast, and covers an area of ​​11,835 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Idaho County , Valley County , Custer County , Butte County, and Clark County .

history

Lemhi County was formed on January 9, 1869 from parts of Idaho County. It was named after Fort Lemhi , which was named after a character from the Book of Mormons .

Lemhi County has a National Historic Landmark , the Lemhi Pass . 14 other structures and sites are on the National Register of Historic Places .

Lemhi County had 7,806 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 27 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3,275 households and 2,217 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.6 percent white, 0.1 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and 0.8 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent are descended from two or more races. 2.2 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 99.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 97.5 men.

The median household income was 30,185 USD , and the median income for a family 35,261 USD. Males had a median income of $ 30,558 versus $ 18,289 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,037. 10.6 percent of families and 15.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
