List of National Historic Landmarks in Idaho

This complete list of Idaho National Historic Landmarks names the 10 sites that are listed as National Historic Landmarks (NHL) in the state of Idaho and are under the supervision of the National Park Service . These document events from the Lewis and Clark expedition to the beginnings of nuclear power . The sites are listed by their official designations on the National Register of Historic Places .

1 Assay Office Assay Office 0May 5, 1961 Boise Ada The Assay Office was built by the federal government in 1870/71 and was in operation from 1872 to 1933. It symbolizes the importance of mining in the history of Idaho and the American West.
2 Bear River Massacre Site BearRiverMassacreSite.png June 21, 1990 Preston Franklin Site where volunteers from California attacked a group of Shoshone on January 29, 1863 . The Bear River Massacre claimed the lives of 300 Shoshone and 14 soldiers.
3 Camas Meadows Battle Sites April 11, 1989 Kilgore Clark Locations of the Battle of Camas Creek where the Nez Percé were able to further evade capture.

Kootenai This Jesuit mission from the 1850s is the oldest surviving mission church in the Pacific Northwest . It served the efforts to convert the Coeur d'Alene .
5 City of Rocks City of Rocks July 19, 1964 Almo

Cassia Thousands of emigrants on the California Trail made this a popular rest stop, leaving wagon tracks that are still visible today. The landscape, consisting of free-standing rocks that towered up like city buildings, forests and mountains was a pleasant change to them from the flat plains of the Great Basin .
6th Experimental Breeder Reactor No. 1 The world's first functioning breeder reactor December 21, 1965 Arco

Butte This research reactor was the world's first nuclear reactor with electrical power generation on December 20, 1951, as well as the first functioning breeder reactor .
7th Fort Hall January 20, 1961 Fort Hall Bannock Outpost where the Oregon Trail branches off from the California Trail .

Clearwater (ID) and Missoula, MT A difficult trail used by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805 and 1806 .

Other sites under the supervision of the National Park Service

National Historic Sites National Historic Parks , National Memorials, and a few other sites are also under the control of the United States National Park Service , but like the NHLs, enjoy greater protection than those generally listed on the National Register of Historic Places , without being considered National Historic Landmarks. There are two such areas in Idaho.
