Beaverhead County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . It was founded in 1864. The county seat is Dillon , the largest and most important city in the county.

The federal agency United States Census Bureau , according to the county has eliminated a total area of 14,432 square kilometers, of which 77 square kilometers (0.53 percent) to water areas. This makes it the largest county in Montana by area. The county is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Deer Lodge County , Silver Bow County , Madison County , Fremont County , Clark County , Lemhi County, and Ravalli Counties .

Beaverhead County has a national battlefield , the Big Hole National Battlefield . Two locations have National Historic Landmark status , the ghost town of Bannack and the Lemhi Pass . A total of 18 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 7, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , the county had 9,202 people. There were 3,684 households and 2,354 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.86% White, 0.18% African American, 1.46% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 1.09% other races Groups; 1.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.67% of the population.

Of the 3,684 households, 30.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.80% were married couples living together, 6.20% were single mothers. 36.10% were not families. 29.70% are single households and 11.00% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.95.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.60% of residents under the age of 18, 11.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.10% between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.90% between 45 and 64 years of age 13.60% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 105.00 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 102.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,962 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,971. Males had a median income of $ 26,162 versus $ 18,115 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,621. 17.10% of the population and 12.80% of families are below the poverty line. 20.30% of them were under 18 years of age and 12.20% were 65 years of age or older.
