Carbon County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is located in Red Lodge .

The county had 9,552 people as of the 2000 census . There were 4,065 households and 2,707 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.07% White, 0.25% African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 0.65% other races Groups; 0.99% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.77% of the population.

Of the 4,065 households, 28.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.70% were married couples living together, 6.70% were single mothers. 33.40% were not families. 28.80% were single households and 12.10% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.86 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.00% residents under 18 years of age, 5.70% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.10% between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 16.80% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 100.40 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,139 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,405. Males had a median income of $ 30,226 versus $ 19,945 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,204. 11.60% of the population and 8.20% of families are below the poverty line. 14.30% of them were under 18 years of age and 8.80% were 65 years of age or older.
