Custer County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is in Miles City .

history

The county was named after General George Armstrong Custer (1839–1876).

As of the 2000 census , the county had 11,696 people. There were 4,768 households and 3,089 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.02% White, 0.09% African American, 1.27% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 0.34% other races Groups; 0.97% from two or more races. 1.51% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4,768 households, 30.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 51.10% were married couples living together, 10.00% were single mothers. 35.20% were not families. 29.90% are single households and 12.30% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.94.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.10% residents under 18 years of age, 8.40% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 17.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.80 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.20 males.
