As of the 2000 census , the county had 1,279 people. There were 532 households and 366 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.14% White, 0.08% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, and 0.00% other races Groups; 0.23% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.39% of the population.
Of the 532 households, 28.80% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 60.30% were married couples living together, 4.50% were single mothers. 31.20% were not families. 28.20% were single households and 13.50% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.93.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.50% residents under 18 years of age, 7.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 19.30% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 106.60 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 103.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,917 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,111. Males had a median income of $ 20,474 versus $ 14,531 for females.
