The Phillips County is a county in the state of Montana to the United States . The county seat is in Malta .

The county had a population of 4,601 people as of the 2000 census . There were 1,848 households and 1,241 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.44% White, 0.15% African American, 7.61% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.37% other races Groups; 2.09% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.15% of the population.

Of the 1,848 households, 31.90% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.20% were married couples living together, 6.80% were single mothers. 32.80% were not families. 29.10% were single households and 14.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.03.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 5.50% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.10% between 45 and 64 years of age 17.60% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 100.40 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,702 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,529. Males had a median income of $ 25,132 versus $ 20,274 women. The per capita income was $ 15,058. 18.30% of the population and 13.80% of families are below the poverty line. 23.10% of these were under 18 years of age and 12.10% were 65 years of age or older.
