Richland County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is in Sydney .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 9,667 people. There were 3,878 households and 2,652 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.57% White, 0.09% African American, 1.46% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, and 0.85% other races Groups; 0.85% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.16% of the population.
Of the 3,878 households, 33.60% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.30% were married couples living together, 7.40% were single mothers. 31.60% were not families. 28.80% were single households and 12.90% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.04.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.50% residents under 18 years of age, 6.40% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.80% between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 15.60% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.90 males.
The median income for a household in the 32,110 USD , and the median income for a family was 39,348 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,069 versus $ 19,203 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,006. 12.20% of the population and 8.10% of families are below the poverty line. 13.90% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.00% were 65 years of age or older.

In the county is a National Historic Site , the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site , which also has the status of a National Historic Landmark . Two of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 7, 2018).
