Sidney is the easternmost city in the US state of Montana (Montana's Sunrise City). It is the seat of the county seat of Richland County and has about 5000 residents.
history
When the first settlers settled in the area of today's city in 1870 and the first school was built 17 years later in 1887, a post office was also to be built, but only after the city had been given a name. A boy named Sidney Walters lived in the house of the justice of the peace , and he was very fond of him. While working on the founding documents, he decided that Sidney was also a good name for the new town. Established in the city, therefore, is 1888. 1911, the town was then officially registered.
Sidney was part of Dawson County until 1914, when Richland County was created with Sidney as the county seat through a referendum . The place grew rapidly and soon a new school was needed (1916) and in 1936 a high school was even completed. In 1961 the residents celebrated a big 50th anniversary.
economy
There was an oil boom in the early 1980s that shifted the direction of the economy from agriculture to industry. In addition to the precious metals gold, silver and copper, which are frequently found in Montana, there are some agate deposits in the area around Sidney that are also used commercially.
