According to the 2000 census , the county had 1,932 people. There were 803 households and 529 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.20% White, 0.00% African American, 1.04% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 0.57% other races Groups; 0.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.50% of the population.

Of the 803 households, 27.30% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.80% were married couples living together, 6.10% were single mothers. 34.10% were not families. 31.00% were single households and 13.70% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.00.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.00% residents under 18 years of age, 6.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, 28.10% between 45 and 64 years of age 18.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 100.40 males, and for every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 100.40 males.

The median income for a household in the 29,375 USD , and the median income for a family was 33,879 USD. Males had a median income of $ 22,083 versus $ 15,417 for females.
