Big Horn County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is Hardin , which is also the largest and most important city in the county.

The county is located in southern Montana, borders Wyoming to the south , is 100 km to the east of Nebraska , and borders Montana clockwise with the counties: Carbon County , Yellowstone County , Treasure County , Rosebud County, and Powder River County . The total area is 12,988 km²
history
In Big Horn County there is a national monument , the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument . Two locations have National Historic Landmark status , Chief Plenty Coups (Alek-Chea-Ahoosh) State Park and Home and Rosebud Battlefield State Park . 39 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 7, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , the county had 12,671 people. There were 3,924 households and 3,033 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 36.60% White, 0.04% African American, 59.66% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, and 0.68% other races Groups; 2.79% were from two or more races. 3.67% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,924 households, 42.40% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.00% were married couples living together, 17.60% were single mothers. 22.70% were not families. 19.30% were single households and 6.70% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.17 and the average family size was 3.66.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 35.80% residents under 18 years of age, 8.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 8.60% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 97.30 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.00 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 27,684 , and the median income for a family was $ 31,095. Males had a median income of $ 23,814 versus $ 18,884 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,792. 29.20% of the population and 23.70% of families are below the poverty line. 37.00% of these were under 18 years of age and 20.10% were 65 years of age or older.
