Bighorn Canyon

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is a 120,296 acres (487 km²) large recreation area of ​​national importance around the Bighorn River on the border of the US states Wyoming and Montana . The area was defined as a National Recreation Area in 1968 and is administered by the National Park Service .

Bighorn Lake

The human history of the area can be traced back at least 12,000 years. In the late 16th century were Absarokee - Indians down here. In 1805, the merchant François-Antoine Larocque may have been the first white man to travel to the Bighorn River area. As a result, the area was explored by Americans. In the late 19th century, ranchers settled here. In the first half of the 1960s, the Yellowtail Dam was built, which dammed the Bighorn River to Bighorn Lake. In 1968 the potential as a recreational area was given weight by the establishment of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area .

Tourist use

The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area offers tourist activities on and in the water. Historical ranches can also be visited. Several campsites are available for overnight stays. There are visitor centers in Lovell, Wyoming and at the Yellowtail Dam. An entrance fee is charged when visiting the recreation area. Every year between 200,000 and 250,000 people visit the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.
