The Pierre-sur-Haute is a mountain in the French Massif Central and at 1631  m the highest point in the Loire department .

The Chalmazel ski area is located on the mountain and the Pierre-sur-Haute radio station on its summit .

geology

The mountain consists of gneiss and granite . Remnants of an ancient mountain from the Paleozoic have existed for 300 million years. This ancient terrain was then smoothed out by erosion in the Mesozoic Era. The folding of the Alps caused cracks and a block of granite was lifted up. The Pierre-sur-Haute is the highest point of this raised block.

flora

The hilltop is a heathland that covers around 8,000 hectares. It is the only known location of the Alpine lettuce in the Massif Central. A coniferous forest , which mainly consists of pines , extends to the tree line at around 1400 m . The area is partly under nature protection as Natura 2000 .

tourism

Snowkiting on the Pierre-sur-Haute

In good weather, the Alps, the Plomb du Cantal , the Monts Dore massif and the Puy de Dôme can be seen from the summit . On the slope of the mountain there is a ski slope and on the top of the mountain there is a designated area for snowkiting . A chairlift runs all year round from the Chalmazel station (1109 m) to an altitude of 1463 m. In winter there is also a ski lift up to an altitude of 1600 m.
