Chalmazel is a village and a commune Déléguée in the French community chalmazel-Jeansagnière with 356 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Chalmazel is located about 60 kilometers east of Clermont-Ferrand on the eastern edge of the Regional Nature Park Livradois-Forez (French: Parc naturel régional du Livradois-Forez ) in the Lignon du Forez valley . Chalmazel lies at the foot of the Monts du Forez mountain range and its highest mountain, Pierre-sur-Haute .

history

The first written mention comes from the year 1214. In 1231 the Count of Forez Guy IV. Allowed the Arnaud de Marcilly to build a fortress in the area of ​​Chalmazel. A church was built around 1270, which was demolished in 1881 and replaced by a new building. After the death of the last Marquis of Marcilly, the castle fell to the Saint-Joseph monastery, which operated a hospital in the castle until 1972. Since January 1, 2016, Chalmazel has been part of the municipality of Chalmazel-Jeansagnière . The municipality of Chalmazel previously belonged to the arrondissement of Montbrison and the canton of Boën-sur-Lignon .
