Toole County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is in Shelby .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 5,267 people. There were 1,962 households and 1,308 families. The population density was 1.06 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.89% White, 0.15% African American, 3.19% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.32% other races Groups; 2.13% were from two or more races. 1.16% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,962 households, 32.30% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.80% were married couples living together, 6.50% were single mothers. 33.30% were not families. 30.20% were single households and 13.70% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.09.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.50% of residents under 18 years of age, 6.80% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.20% between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.60% between 45 and 64 years of age 15.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 106.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 107.20 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 30,169 , and the median income for a family was $ 39,600. Males had a median income of $ 27,284 versus $ 19,141 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,731. 12.90% of the population and 9.70% of families are below the poverty line. 15.00% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.50% were 65 years of age or older.
