As of the 2000 census , the county had 5,267 people. There were 1,962 households and 1,308 families. The population density was 1.06 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.89% White, 0.15% African American, 3.19% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.32% other races Groups; 2.13% were from two or more races. 1.16% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,962 households, 32.30% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.80% were married couples living together, 6.50% were single mothers. 33.30% were not families. 30.20% were single households and 13.70% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over.
