Petroleum County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is in Winnett .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 493 people. There were 211 households and 136 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.19% White, 0.00% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 0.20% other races Groups; 0.41% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.22% of the population.

Of the 211 households, 31.30% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.90% were married couples living together, 5.70% were single mothers. 35.10% were not families. 31.30% are single households and 17.50% have someone living there who is 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.95.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.00% residents under 18 years of age, 6.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, 28.20% between 45 and 64 years of age 17.00% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 110.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 111.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,107 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,667. Males had a median income of $ 20,694 versus $ 17,188 for females.
