Powell County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is located at Deer Lodge .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 43,282 people. There were 2,422 households and 1,634 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.52% White, 0.50% African American, 3.51% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 0.74% other races Groups; 2.30% were from two or more races. 1.95% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,422 households, 29.50% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.50% were married couples living together, 7.70% were single mothers. 32.50% were not families. 28.60% were single households and 13.30% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.93.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.20% of residents under 18 years of age, 7.80% between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.80% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.20% between 45 and 64 years of age 14.00% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 143.20 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 151.40 males.
The median income for a household in the 30,625 USD , and the median income for a family was 35,836 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,366 versus $ 20,457 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,816. 12.60% of the population and 10.20% of families are below the poverty line. 16.20% of these were under 18 years of age and 6.00% were 65 years of age or older.

Powell County has a National Historic Site , Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site , which also has the status of a National Historic Landmark . A total of 17 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 7, 2018).
