Stillwater County is a county in the state of Montana in the United States . The county seat is in Columbus .

The county had 8,195 people as of the 2000 census . There were 3,234 households and 2,347 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.82% White, 0.13% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.94% other races Groups; 1.18% from two or more races. 2.01% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,234 households, 32.60% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 64.60% were married couples living together, 5.00% were single mothers. 27.40% were not families. 24.10% were single households and 9.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 5.70% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.90% between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.60% between 45 and 64 years of age 14.50% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 104.00 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 102.80 males.

The median income for a household in the 39,205 USD , and the median income for a family was 45,238 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,148 versus $ 19,271 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,468. 9.80% of the population and 6.20% of families are below the poverty line. 12.20% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.20% were 65 years of age or older.
