history

After the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway was built across Montana in 1887 , Malta developed from what was then siding 54. In 1890 a post office was established in Malta. The place supposedly got its name when a Great Northern Railway employee turned a globe and paused his finger over the state of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea .

The outlaw Sundance Kid , along with Harry Bass and Bill Madden, robbed a train near Malta in 1892. He was a member of the crime group The Wild Bunch , led by Butch Cassidy . On July 3, 1901, another member of the gang, Harvey Logan, known as Kid Curry, robbed a train near Malta. He looted $ 40,000.
