Custer County Courthouse in Miles City |
Miles City is a city in the US state of Montana and is a county seat of Custer County .
geography
The city is right on the Yellowstone River .
history
Today's Miles City developed significantly in the second half of the 19th century when alcohol was banned in the Tongue River Cantonment military base . As a result, the soldiers stationed there moved into the settlement to consume alcohol there, which favored the development of the local gastronomy. The place was then named after the commander of the base Nelson Appleton Miles, initially only Miles or Milestown and in 1877 it was designated the administrative seat of Custer County.
By adding more land for settlement, another place, known as New Miles , was created in addition to the then so-called Old Miles , which was officially registered as a municipality in 1878. Later the parishes were combined as Miles City into a single city. Around 1880 the place had 23 restaurants with 550 inhabitants, but no church. Soon, however, other services such as retailers, saddleries and laundries also settled and sheep and cattle breeders settled in the surrounding area.
On June 19, 1938, after heavy rain, a tidal wave damaged the railway bridge over Custer Creek , a tributary of the Yellowstone River. It collapsed when the next train passed over it. 47 people died.
