Yellowstone River
The Yellowstone River is a right tributary of the Missouri River . It is 1,114 kilometers long and flows through the western United States. The Hidatsa - Indians called the river because of the yellow coloring of the rock on its shores Mi tse a-da-zi , what with the early French trappers Rivière des Roches Jaunes translated and Rene Jessaune in 1798 for the Canadian explorer David Thompson with Yellowstone (English).
The Yellowstone River rises in the northwest of the state of Wyoming , near Younts Peak , at the North American watershed in the Rocky Mountains . It flows north through Yellowstone National Park , flows through Yellowstone Lake , falls down three waterfalls and forms the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone .
Further north in Montana it flows through the Absaroka mountain range and is fed by the water of the mountains at Livingston , where it turns east-northeast and winds through the northern plains to Billings .
East of Billings it is growing from the Bighorn River , at Miles City from the Tongue River and in eastern Montana from the Powder River .
Immediately after the North Dakota border , it finally flows into the Missouri. The Yellowstone is wider than the Missouri at this point.
history
Yellowstone was explored by William Clark in 1806 , returning from the Lewis and Clark expedition . The Yellowstone was already an important route of transportation for the Indians . In the 19th century it also gained importance for the white settlers . In Montana, it has been used extensively for irrigation since the 1860s.
