Wind River in the Bighorn River basin

The Wind River forms the upper reaches of the Bighorn River in the US state of Wyoming .

It rises at Togwotee Pass in the Wind River Range at an altitude of about 2930  m . It flows in a predominantly easterly direction past the town of Dubois through the Wind River Basin , a semi-arid high valley east of the Rocky Mountains . The US Highway 26 follows the river. At Riverton , the Little Wind River flows into the river from the south. This now turns to the north. It is dammed up from Boysen Dam to a reservoir, the Boysen Reservoir ; both are located in Boysen State Park . Then it flows through the Wind River Canyon and reaches 5 km south of Thermopolis replace Wedding of the Waters , from which the river then the Bighorn River is called.

The Wind River has a length of 298 km. Its catchment area covers 20,021 km². The mean discharge below the Boysen Dam is 38 m³ / s. Much of the course and catchment area of ​​the Wind River lies within the Wind River Indian Reservation .
