The dam Boysen ( English Boysen Dam ) is a dam with hydroelectric plant in Fremont County , State of Wyoming , USA . It dams the Wind River to a reservoir ( English Boysen Reservoir ). The dam is located approximately 32 km (20  miles ) south of the town of Thermopolis . The dam and reservoir are in Boysen State Park .

The dam is owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) and is also operated by the USBR.

history

The businessman Asmus Boysen built a first concrete dam (Old Boysen Dam) in 1908 , about 2.4 km (1.5 miles) downstream from the current dam. It was mainly used to generate electricity. Due to flooding, this dam wall had to be partially blown up in 1923. It was not repaired afterwards and was completely removed in 1948.

Preliminary investigations for the construction of a new dam at the current location were carried out in 1939 and 1941. On December 22, 1944, Congress passed the Flood Control Act , through which u. A. The construction of the dam has been approved. The development of the construction site and preparatory work were carried out from 1946 to 1947. Construction of the dam began on September 19, 1947. It was completed on December 11, 1952. The impoundment began on October 11, 1951; electricity generation could begin in August 1952.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is an earth embankment dam with a height of 67 m (220  ft ) above the foundation level . The dam crest is at an altitude of 1450 m (4758 ft) above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 348 m (1143 ft). The width of the dam is 280 m (919 ft) at the base and 9 m (30 ft) at the crown. The volume of the structure is 1.16 million m³ (1.5 million  cubic yards ).

The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . The flood discharge is on the right side of the dam. A maximum of 36.8 m³ / s (1300 cft / s) can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a  maximum of 708 m³ / s (25,000 cft / s) via the flood discharge.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 1440 m (4725 ft) (max. 4732 ft at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 79.56 km² (19,660  acres ) and holds 989 million m³ (802,000 acre-feet ) of water. The reservoir extends over a length of around 29 km (18  miles ); its maximum width is 8.85 km (5.5 mile).

By sedimentation , the original storage space reduced to 1994 by 9.5% to 914 million cubic meters (741,594 acre-feet).

power plant

The power plant is located at the foot of the dam on the right side of the river. Its installed capacity is 15  MW . The power plant's two Francis turbines have a maximum output of 7.5 MW each. The average annual generation is 37.8 (or 54) million  kWh . The fall height is 30 m (99 ft).

Others

The total cost of the project is given as $ 18 million  ; they were thus approximately USD 4.5 million above the original budget.
