Tom Hanel

Thomas W. "Tom" Hanel (* 1954/55 in Miles City , Montana ) has been Mayor of Billings , the largest city in the US state of Montana , since January 2010 .

Life

Hanel was born and raised in the small town of Miles City in eastern Montana. He moved to Billings in 1973 to study at Eastern Montana College . In 1976 he joined the city police, where he served in various positions, including 16 years in the SWAT team. In 1996 Tom Hanel left the Billings Police Department at the age of 41 and moved to Big Timber, his hometown, with his wife Robin . There he began to work as a real estate agent and to get involved in the local politics of his new place of residence. In 1999, Hanel was elected to Big Timber's council for two years, after which he was mayor of the 1,600-strong community for two years.

When his wife commuting to Billings was injured in a traffic accident, Tom Hanel decided to return to Billings. In 2009 he applied there for the office of mayor of the incumbent incumbent Ron Tussing . Hanel won the election in November with 67.78% of the vote and thus clearly prevailed against its competitor, City Councilor Richard Clark .
