Today (2008) there are a total of 11 National Battlefields, 9 National Military Parks, 3 National Battlefield Parks and one National Battlefield Site. The first such designated area was Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, which was placed under congressional protection in 1890 . The sites were originally maintained by the War Department , but on August 10, 1933, this task was transferred to the National Park Service. In some of the areas there are military cemeteries , some of which are also under protection as United States National Cemetery . On the other hand, some of the memorials set up on major American battlefields were placed under protection as National Monuments (for example the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument ), and some battlefields were also protected as National Historic Sites (such as the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site ).

The designated areas are automatically listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
