The Lolo Pass (altitude 1595 m ) is a mountain pass in the northern Rocky Mountains on the border between the US states of Montana and Idaho , about 40 km west-southwest of Missoula . It is located in the Lolo National Forest .
The pass became famous through the Lewis and Clark expedition , which passed the Bitterroot range via the Lolo Trail (outward journey 1804; return journey 1806).
The pass was used during the Nez-Perce War in 1877 when some of the Nez-Perce under Chief Joseph tried to escape the US Army. Shortly after crossing the pass, the two sides clashed in the battle of the Big Hole in Montana.
The US Highway 12 crosses the ball.
Since October 9, 1960, the Lolo Trail has the status of a National Historic Landmark . On October 15, 1966, the entry as a building in the National Register of Historic Places followed .
