The Bitterroot River is an approximately 125 km long left tributary of the Clark Fork in the US state of Montana .

The Bitterroot River arises at the confluence of its headwaters West Fork and East Fork Bitterroot River in Ravalli County in southwest Montana. It flows through the Bitterroot Valley in a northerly direction. It passes through Darby , Hamilton , Victor and Lolo before it finally flows into the Clark Fork near Missoula . The US Highway 93 follows the entire course of the river. The Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge is 35 km north of Hamilton on the east bank of the Bitterrot River .

The West Fork Bitterroot River has its source in the Bitterroot Mountains in the extreme southwest of Montana. It flows 40 miles in a predominantly northerly direction through the Bitterroot National Forest before joining with the East Fork Bitterroot River. About 33 km above the mouth, the river to Painted Rocks Lake is dammed.

The East Fork Bitterroot River is approximately 70 km long. It has its origin in the mountain lake Hidden Lake in the Anaconda Range . It initially flows 45 km in a west-southwest direction. US Highway 93 meets the river coming from the south and follows it. The East Fork Bitterroot River flows in the lower reaches in a north-westerly direction and cuts through a mountain ridge running in a north-south direction.

Hydrology

The Bitterroot River drains an area of ​​7381 km². The mean discharge 9.5 km above the mouth is 63.5 m³ / s. The highest monthly discharge occurs in June with an average of 226 m³ / s.
