Missoula is a city in the United States of America in the US state of Montana and is the administrative seat of Missoula County .
Missoula is on the Clark Fork River . Nearby, it joins the Bitterroot River and the Blackfoot River . Furthermore, the city is surrounded by five mountain ranges, which is why it is nicknamed the “hub of five valleys”. According to the United States Census Bureau , Missoula had 72,346 inhabitants in 2016 and the metropolitan area 116,130. After Billings , Missoula is the second largest city and metropolitan area of Montana. Missoula is home to the state University of Montana - Missoula .
Missoula was founded in 1860 as the Hellgate Trading Post and was part of the Washington Territory . In 1866 the settlement had moved 5 miles upstream and was renamed Missoula Mills, which was later shortened to Missoula. At that time, Missoula provided provisions and supplies for settlers moving west along Mullan Road . To better protect the settlers, Fort Missoula was founded in 1877, which stabilized the economy. With the connection to the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1883, there was a boom in the local timber industry. In 1893, Missoula was selected by the Montana government as the site of the state's first university. Together with a headquarters of the United States Forest Service , which was founded in 1908, the timber industry and the university remained the most important economic pillars of the city for a long time.
In the 1990s, the timber industry began to stagnate, and as of 2009, the city's main employers have been the University of Montana , Missoula County Public Schools, and the two hospitals. The city is ruled by a mayor and 12 council members, with 2 members from each district. In and around Missoula there are 160 hectares of pasture land, 35 km of hiking trails and almost 20 km² of protected open pasture land, which is home to elk and deer in winter. The city is home to the oldest and largest Montana breweries. The Montana Grizzlies are one of the strongest college football teams in Division I of the NCAA . Famous residents include first congressman Jeannette Rankin and longest-serving Senate party leader Mike Mansfield .
Missoula has one international airport, Missoula International Airport ( IATA code MSO).
