Leroy Edward Hood (born October 10, 1938 in Missoula , Montana ) is an American physician and biologist .

His merits lie in particular in his work on the automation of DNA sequencing (see sequencing machine ) and on the variety of possible antibodies of an individual through recombination of genetic information (see V (D) J recombination ).

Life

Hood earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena , California in 1960 . In 1964 he completed his studies in medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore , Maryland , with the MD from. In 1968 Hood earned a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. in biochemistry .

In 1975 Hood received a professorship for biology at Caltech, in 1980 he took over the management of the local department of biology and in 1981 also that of the local Cancer Center . In 1989, Hood became director of the NSF Science and Technology Center for Molecular Biotechnology at the National Science Foundation (NSF), which is jointly operated by Caltech and the University of Washington . In 1992 Hood took over a professorship at the University of Washington in Seattle and headed the Department of Molecular Biotechnology there . Hood has headed the Institute for Systems Biology since 1999 .

Since 2019 the media group Clarivate has counted him among the favorites for a Nobel Prize ( Clarivate Citation Laureates ).
