A star falls from the sky is an Austrian song and love film by Max Neufeld with Joseph Schmidt in the leading role.

action

Josef Reiner is a Viennese music student, extremely talented as a tenor , but not particularly vigorous. The young Annerl Bachinger, a piano teacher by trade, secretly adores Josef because of his bell-like, dreamlike voice. Reiner has just lost a vocal role in a cinema production with the popular vocal tenor Lincoln, because Reiner fails to play the magnificent operatic voice every time he sees someone bite into a lemon. This is the chance for Annerl to show her love to “her” Josef. She goes to the film production company to warmly recommend Josef to the director. By chance she ends up in a film set in which Lincoln is currently staying. She thinks she sees the head of the film company in this room designed as an office. Lincoln takes a liking to the dashing Maderl and invites her to a wine tavern evening , where Josef Reiner is supposed to perform. As luck would have it, Lincoln's manager Tomson is also present at this time, but he is not allowed to know that the film favorite is also here.

When Tomson hears Reiner's voice, which bears great resemblance to the Lincoln's, he is mad as hell because he believes that the film favorite, Lincoln, is indulging in a simple wine tavern. Promptly, the star and manager clash the following day, and as a result of the argument, Lincoln picks up a bottle that he suspects is whiskey. But it contains a caustic liquid that temporarily makes it impossible for the artist to sing. That is now Josef Reiner's hour. Although he initially refuses to lend Lincoln his own voice for the rest of the film shoots, he finally lets himself be persuaded to do so. While Lincoln opens and closes his mouth, Josef sings for him behind the curtain. The whole affair threatens to be exposed soon, since Josef now has to find out that Lincoln, more than Josef can please, is beginning to be interested in the pretty Annerl. Now Tomson and Josef clash, and the press present hears all of this. To save the precarious situation, Lincoln claims that everything was staged this way because he wanted to introduce the new singing talent Josef Reiner to the general public in this way. After all, Josef not only gets the chance for a great singing career, but also the heart of his Annerl.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists summed up: “Xth variation of the 'Singer Fate', staged with nice ideas but at a not too brisk pace. Schmidt is used according to his skills ... A good medium film. "

The Österreichische Film-Zeitung wrote: "The voice of the singer is reproduced softly and melodiously through the microphone."

On film.at it says: “What is beautiful and absolutely appropriate to the best of all Joseph Schmidt films: Neufeld could do something like no other with the squat, visually not particularly conspicuous, but warmly charismatic tenor and cantor. This is particularly evident in the range of the film, its mood and feeling register. "
