Elisabeth Markus , full name Elisabeth Martha Leopoldine Francisca Markus (born December 15, 1895 in Weikersdorf am Steinfelde , Lower Austria , † January 19, 1970 in Vienna ), was an Austrian actress and radio play speaker .

Life

Elisabeth Markus was born as the daughter of the pharmacist Eugen Markus. She received training at the theater school of the German People's Theater in Vienna. From 1917 to 1930 she was a member of the Volkstheater ensemble in Vienna. In 1931 Elisabeth Markus went on a theater tour with Max Reinhardt . This was followed by engagements at various stages in Vienna. From 1939 she was a member of the ensemble at the Theater in der Josefstadt . There were also occasional guest performances at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin . She also taught at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in later years .

Elisabeth Markus also worked in numerous film and television productions .

These included feature films such as Back then from 1943 directed by Rolf Hansen with Zarah Leander , Hans Stüwe and Hilde Körber , 1953 The Regiment Daughter of Georg C. Klaren and Günther Haenel with Aglaja Schmid , Robert Lindner and Gusti Wolf and 1957 The Unexcused Hour by Willi Forst with Adrian Hoven , Erika Remberg and Hans Moser . She played her last role in a feature film in 1966 in the Graf Bobby film Graf Bobby, the horror of the wild west , directed by Paul Martin with Peter Alexander , Gunther Philipp and Hanne Wieder .

Elisabeth Markus was seen on television in 1961 in the adaptation of the comedy Die Kassette by Carl Sternheim , staged by Rudolf Noelte with Theo Lingen , Bruni Löbel and Hans Putz .

She also worked as a speaker in several radio play productions . In the radio play version of Rosenkavalier based on the libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal in a production by Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) from 1962, she played the role of Duenna . Käthe Gold , Helmut Qualtinger , Albert Rueprecht and Hermann Thimig played next to her .

Elisabeth Markus had been married to the actor Erich Nikowitz since 1965 . She was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery in an honorary grave ( Ehrenhain (group 40 number 24) ) of the City of Vienna.
