action

After completing her training as a teacher, Magdalena Percht, the mayor's daughter, returns to her rural home community. When she meets her childhood friend Andreas Möbius there, her feelings for the young man reawaken. Word soon got around that Andreas had developed into a good-for-nothing and bully, which conjured up a conflict with Lena. But Andreas succeeds in breaking their defensive stance with violence. When the young woman became pregnant, many villagers turned away from her. Even her mother, a bigoted, careworn woman, no longer wants to have anything to do with her.

In her desperation, Lena wants to throw herself into the torrent; however, her father can prevent her. He now wants to force Andreas to marry his daughter in order to avert the stigma of illegitimate birth from her. In the sawmill belonging to the Möbius brothers, however, Mayor Percht only meets Christian, Andreas's brother. He promises old Percht that he will see to it that his daughter's child is born in wedlock. But Andreas evades his responsibility; he leaves his hometown without leaving a new address. Christian steps in for him and marries the girl. What looks like a marriage of convenience at first turns into real love over time.

After Andreas found out in a foreign country what happened to Magdalena, he wants to take her back. When he shows up late at night, she rejects him. The hot spur tries again with violence. Desperate, Lena tears herself away from him and runs to the torrent, followed by Andreas. He wants to pull her back, but it's too late. Both plunge into the wild water. With the help of his loyal dog, Christian manages to save the two. Now Andreas also comes to the conclusion that he no longer has a chance with Lena.
