Erwin Strahl
Erwin Strahl (born February 12, 1929 as Erwin Eduard Bäuml in Vienna - Hietzing ; † April 20, 2011 in Vienna) was an Austrian actor .
Life
Strahl attended the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and received his first engagement at the Klagenfurt City Theater in 1948 . In 1950 he appeared on stage for the first time in Vienna in the private theater “Die Insel”. He made guest appearances in Lucerne , Zurich and St. Gallen . Strahl, who was not tied to any particular theater, also appeared at the Münchner Kammerspiele , in Vienna at the Theater in der Josefstadt and in Berlin at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm.
Strahl began his film work as the leading actor in an early educational film . After that he was mostly seen in small roles in homeland films and other productions of the fifties. He often mimed smooth, negatively drawn characters that stand in the way of others. In the Ludwig Ganghofer film Der Jäger von Fall (1957) he was seen as a poacher . In the Edgar Wallace film adaptation of The Frog with the Mask (1959) he played a policeman who turned out to be an accomplice in a gang of criminals. In the television adaptation of the novel Radetzkymarsch (1965) he was seen as the arrogant Rittmeister Count Tattenbach, who willfully kills the Jewish regimental doctor in a provoked duel. Strahl also worked as a translator and editor of foreign language plays. For once in 1970 he tried his hand at filming a Lederhosen film as a director and screenwriter.
In 2009 the artist was appointed a full honorary member of the European Cultural Workshop (EKW) in the Admiralspalast Berlin in recognition of his long-standing and outstanding services to theater, film and art.
Erwin Strahl was buried in the closest family circle in the Hietzinger Friedhof (group 17, row 3, number 130) in Vienna.
In 2019 the Erwin-Strahl-Weg in Maxingpark in Vienna-Hietzing was named after him.
