Gunther Philipp (born June 8, 1918 in Töplitz , Austria-Hungary ; † October 2, 2003 in Bonn-Bad Godesberg ; actually Gunther Placheta ) was an Austrian athlete , doctor and actor .

Life

Gunther Philipp's parents were the future veterinarian Hugo Placheta and his wife Therese. Gunther was born in what is now Romania ( Transylvania ), where his father was stationed during the war. Soon after the birth, the family returned to their home town of Vienna . Philipp received his school education in Vienna and Innsbruck (on later visits to Hötting in Innsbruck he liked to call himself half a Höttinger). Philipp was a successful swimmer: he held the Austrian record in the 100-meter breaststroke for 14 years . He was also a member of the Austrian Olympic team in Berlin in 1936, but was not nominated for political reasons because he did not want to join the National Socialist-dominated “First Vienna Amateur Sports Club”.

During the Second World War , Philipp studied drama at the Max Reinhardt Seminar and philosophy at the University of Vienna, majoring in psychology and then medicine . Philipp received his doctorate in 1943 and did his military service in a field hospital. After the war he ran a practice in Eberstalzell in Upper Austria and worked at the Vienna University Clinic for Neurology and Psychiatry until the 1990s . One of his patients in 1946 was the actress Paula Wessely .

In 1946 he founded the cabaret group “Die kleine Vier” together with Peter Wehle and Fred Kraus . At the end of 1949 Philipp largely gave up his civil profession and worked mainly as an actor or moderator, but maintained a keen interest in medical topics throughout his life and read relevant specialist journals. On the side he also wrote countless programs for the radio and scripts for the film . He also celebrated success at the theater as a tabloid actor. His films with Peter Alexander and Hans Moser became known , which he enriched with his specific comedy.

In the 1950s, Philipp founded his own motorsport racing team, Ecurie Vienne, and started in the Gran Turismo class. He was Austrian national champion several times in the 1960s. After his retirement, he hosted together with Jochen Rindt (after his death alone), the ORF telecast Motorama .

Gunther Philipp was one of the most popular and busiest German-speaking actors, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. He appeared in 147 film and television roles .

As an author, Philipp wrote 21 scripts.

He was married four times, most recently to the much younger doctor's daughter Gisela Kirchberg from Cologne, and was the father of three sons.

On October 2nd, 2003 Gunther Philipp died after a long illness at the age of 85 years in a clinic in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne in the immediate vicinity of his fellow actors Willy Birgel , René Deltgen and Gisela Uhlen , whose husband he played in the series Forsthaus Falkenau until his death.

After he had made many films in the Wachau , a museum was set up for him there - in the Hotel Mariandl, the location of the film The Hofrat Geiger in Spitz an der Donau in Lower Austria.
