action

In the Austro-Hungarian infantry barracks in Woroslav there is great excitement in a reachable by train city a guest appearance operetta from Vienna with the piece The tramps . Although Colonel Joseph Zierpfandl gives the entire regiment leave until they wake up, his wife Melanie dampens the joy immediately: The regiment has to stay in the barracks as a field exercise is imminent. It should begin when the Archduke comes into the barracks. Melanie has been hoping for this for five years and is also linked with the wish to finally see her husband as a general.

First Lieutenant Ferdinand von Pottenstein and his boy Leopold Eppeseder, who were transferred from Vienna to the barracks, arrive in Woroslav. Both are not particularly interested in the ban on going out, especially since they were arrested in the room for a first misstep at the beginning. They secretly flee the barracks. Since the play is again forbidden for soldiers, they dress in civilian clothes - they get the suits from the theater group's costume fund, as actress Karoline Käfer is enthusiastic about the two German champions .

After the performance is over, the theater group moves on. Ferdinand and Leopold recognize that their uniforms are still in the fundus box, but the fundus box hastily thrown to them turns out to be the wrong one. In the morning they drive to Woroslav in civilian clothes. On the train they meet Karoline and her friend Konstanze again. Konstanze turns out to be negative towards Ferdinand, but would bring herself to smile if the men could find them a seat in the overcrowded compartment. When Leopold was unable to assert himself by force, he turned directly to the station master Kobischek during a stop. He claims that Archduke Karl Anton is traveling incognito on the train, but has no seat.

Instead of vacating two places, Kobischek lapses into excited actionism. For the arrival of the Archduke, a saloon car was kept ready for years , which is now coupled to the train. Ferdinand is forced to play the Archduke and Leopold pretends to be his adjutant. The women, in turn, are enthusiastic and Konstanze is suddenly interested in Ferdinand. Kobischek, in turn, sends the news that the Archduke is coming to Woroslav through to all stations, and Ferdinand is greeted frenetically at every stop. In front of Woroslav, where an honor guard awaits him, the men confess their prank to the women.

After a brief indignation, Konstanze and Karoline step in: They dress up as archduke and adjutant, as in the play, while Ferdinand and Leopold improvise in women's clothes as their respective wives. The masquerade continues in Woroslav: Because Colonel Joseph Zierpfandl was not in the house when the news of the Archduke's arrival arrived, Melanie quickly slipped into the role of Colonel and gave the orders. She does not know that Joseph has been meeting the real Archduke Rudolph-Karl for years to hunt ducks and that the Archduke also knows that the colonel would do anything to prevent an appointment as general.

With the help of Ferdinand and Leopold, Karoline and Konstanze master all the hurdles of the protocol and also survive a reception organized at short notice. However, when Melanie lets the field exercise begin early in the morning, they realize that they have to "leave". Leopold, disguised as a woman, manages to make the boy Navratil fall in love with himself and persuade him to flee together. In the car, however, Karoline and Konstanze flee, who are back in their normal clothes. Ferdinand and Leopold take part in the maneuver normally. Joseph, on the other hand, secretly wants to meet Rudolph-Karl for a duck hunt, but realizes that his wife is planning a spontaneous bridge to finish the maneuver more quickly. Rudolph-Karl offers to blow up the bridge, but is arrested in the attempt and taken to the maneuver target. Ferdinand and Leopold are already here.

Navratil in turn appears with the wagon, in which Karoline and Konstanze are also. Joseph arrives and shortly afterwards Melanie with her group and soldiers with the prisoner real archduke. A chase ensues when the two women jump off the wagon. The chaos only ends when Karoline, Konstanze, Ferdinand and Leopold disguise themselves again and appear as Archduke and team. Now the real Archduke, whom Joseph rescued from his predicament, is brought forward. Rudolph-Karl confronts the four identity swindlers and it turns out that he used to have an affair with Karoline, from which Karoline - as Rudolph-Karl informs - kept Anton. The Archduke wants to cover up the affair and does not reveal the four. As a “punishment” for the arrest, Joseph was not promoted to general, which he noted with relief. Rudolph-Karl transfers Ferdinand and Leopold to Vienna, where the two young women also live. The five of them drive back to Vienna in a saloon car. When Rudolph-Karl inquires about the age of the boy Anton, Karoline confesses that Anton is the parrot that she had received from the Archduke. Everyone bursts out laughing.
