Paul Löwinger (born November 10, 1904 in Laa an der Thaya , † December 17, 1988 in Vienna ) was an Austrian folk actor . He owes his fame to his appearances on the Löwinger stage and numerous film roles.

Life

Paul Löwinger was born as the scion of a well-known Austrian touring stage - the Löwinger-Bühne - operating family during a tour in Laa / Thaya. He gained acting experience as a child. With his parents, the theater principals Josef and Cilli Löwinger, as well as his siblings Heinz and Gretl , he moved through the country with changing programs. They played in front of a simple audience and often only received in kind in return. In 1922 Josef Grabmaier, born on January 13, 1900, joined the troupe, later took the stage name Sepp Löwinger and stayed with the Löwinger stage for a lifetime.

During the 1930s, the stage moved to a permanent location for the first time, namely in Landgutgasse in the Vienna district of Favoriten . During the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1938, the Löwingers appeared in front of television cameras as probably the first theater group in the world.

In the same year Paul married Liesl Meinhard , with whom he had three children, Sissy , Guggi and Paul junior. During the Second World War, the stage was ordered as a front theater to the military bases in Russia, Poland, as well as in the Balkan countries and Greece. After the war the family returned to Vienna, the theater in Landgutgasse had meanwhile been completely destroyed. Paul found a new place to stay in the Renaissance Theater in Neubaugasse, which was the home of the stage for more than 20 years. After his mother's death in 1949, Paul took over the theater management. In 1964 he founded Lisa Film .

Almost all of the siblings stayed with the ensemble until the late 1980s and after the start of Austrian television in 1956, their performances became known beyond the country's borders. For decades, the comedies of the Löwinger stage, which were mainly located in rural areas, were broadcast in the main evening program of the ORF . Several performances were also shown with considerable success on ZDF . Many imitators, such as the comedy nobility of Bayerischer Rundfunk , leaned on the concept of the traditional stage.

Paul was one of the most popular personalities in the Austrian entertainment genre , thanks to his outstanding comedic talent, which was not devoid of whimsicality . Until his death in 1988, the Löwinger stage was a permanent fixture in media life. After that it was continued on a smaller scale by his daughter Sissy.

Paul Löwinger also worked in many German homeland and hit films and achieved national fame with them. Many of the rascals and antics that the Löwinger stage performed over the years came from his pen. He is also remembered by many as a singer of couplets. Paul Löwinger died of heart failure on December 17, 1988 in his Vienna apartment. The grave of Paul and Liesl Löwinger is in the grove of honor at the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 40, number 138).
