action

Johann Ebeseder has headed the small Thalia Theater in Vienna for 15 years. His granddaughter Franziska, who he took in as an orphan after the death of his mother in childbed and the death of his father in the war , and the young Max, who takes care of the piano accompaniment, play in his theater . Max's father Wenzel and the old ex-sea dog Zirbel like to stay in the "Durstigen Fisch", Franz Biedermann's inn. Franz is in constant quarrel with Johann, who sells food himself during breaks in the theater and thus pisses off his customers. Franz also has problems with his daughter Daisy, who uses a room in the inn as a twist disco .

When the engineer Stefan Breuer tells Johann that his theater should give way to the planned Danube Park, which should be built for the International Garden Show by 1964 , he is appalled. At the evening Lumpazivagabundus performance, he accuses Stefan of being a cultural bane in front of the poorly assembled audience. The few loyal spectators want to prevent the theater from being closed, but Stefan also wants to have the town hall checked whether Johann has special rights to the building due to its long use. However, he learns that Johann never had a license to run the theater and that the land on which the theater stands does not belong to him either. Franz is delighted that he will soon be rid of the unwanted competitor, but it is revealed to him that the “Thirsty Fish” will be demolished as well as the theater. The two fighters now join forces against the administration. With a sold out house next weekend, they want to get the city leaders to give in.

While Franz, Johann and the loyal regular spectator Amalia are selling tickets for the planned performance of the Bloody Kunigunde , the young people have a different idea: They want to hire a star for the evening who is supposed to attract the audience. During a television broadcast they kidnap Gerhard Wendland and convince him to appear in the Thalia Theater the next weekend. Wendland announced this in his broadcast and the performance is actually sold out next weekend. In addition to a short version of Bloody Kunigunde, Max and Daisy as well as Gerhard Wendland with Johann and his fellow musicians ensure enthusiastic audiences with their singing. The joy, however, only lasts for a short time, as the theater catches fire during the performance and burns down to the ground.

When Johann later wakes up from his fainting, a strange woman is sitting in front of him, who introduces herself to him as Mrs. Werner, the second wife of Franziska's father. That was not always like how Johann claimed in war, but in captivity fall and later emigrated to America. He has since passed away, but shortly before his death asked his wife to look for Franziska. Franziska has long since got engaged to Stefan and is planning the wedding together. Stefan also brings Johann further good news, as the mayor of Vienna has given him an extraordinary theater license for his special services. Ms. Werner, in turn, gives Franziska and Stefan a saloon ship for their wedding, on which theater can still be played, and makes it a requirement that Johann run this theater. And because Johann Franz Biedermann is the head chef of the new theater, everyone is satisfied on the first maiden voyage of the theater boat, especially since Daisy and Max have finally become a couple.
