Karl Spiehs , also Carl Spiehs , (born February 20, 1931 in Blindendorf- Dunkelstein, a district of the municipality of Ternitz , Lower Austria ; † January 27, 2022 ) was an Austrian film producer .

Life

Start of career as a promoter

The son of the innkeeper couple Karl and Anna Spiehs attended hotel management school and started his career with a performance of the operetta Im Weißen Rössl in his parents' inn. He made a name for himself as a promoter of hit events and lecture tours.

recording and production management

In 1960, he managed to get into the film business with the feature film Die Glocke Ruf , on which he initially worked as second production manager and on completion as co-producer. In 1961, Spiehs was hired by the Wiener Stadthalle , first as music recording manager and then as production manager .

film production

In 1965 he founded his own film company called Intercontinental Film . In 1967 he acquired 50% of the shares in Paul Löwinger 's Lisa Film , which he largely controlled from then on, since Löwinger was limited to his function as a partner.

In the mid-1970s, Spiehs also founded his own film distribution company, Residenz-Film , which, alongside his own films, also brought foreign products to the cinemas and was restructured under the name "Tivoli" in the 1980s . During these years, Spiehs produced a large number of comedy films and other entertainment films , most of which were well received by the public , but were either ignored or often panned by film critics . These films often feature Lake Wörthersee , where Spiehs acquired his summer residence. He occasionally appeared in his films himself, mostly as a limited police officer. Only rarely did he dare to film demanding originals such as Arthur Schnitzler 's Der Reigen in 1973 or Hans Fallada's Everyone Dies for Himself in 1976 .

TV production

Thanks to private television , Spiehs also managed to get into TV production at the beginning of the 1990s. Above all, the RTL series Ein Schloß am Wörthersee , starring the rediscovered Roy Black , was a big hit with the public. He subsequently focused more on television work, gaining widespread recognition with the 2003 two-parter The Return of the Dance Teacher .

private

His daughter Waltraud (* 1952) came from his childhood sweetheart Hilde. Spiehs' first wife Elfriede is the mother of his son Gerhard (* 1958). With the former show assistant Lissy Kofler he has the son Michael Kofler (* 1962). On December 21, 1966, he married actress Angelika Ott . Their sons are the film producer David Spiehs (* 1974) and Benjamin Spiehs (* 1981).
