When you are with me is a music film by director Franz Josef Gottlieb, shot in 1970 in Germany and Thailand. It premiered on August 14, 1970.

action

Flight captain Schneider and his crew get the order in Munich to take over a repaired machine in Bangkok, Thailand, and to fly back to Germany. Almost at the same time, Tamani, the only daughter of a Thai prince who is studying in Munich, is called back to her homeland to marry a local prince, to whom she was engaged as a child.

On the flight to Thailand, Schneider's copilot Chris falls in love with the beautiful stranger and secretly gives her a present with his initials, but initially loses sight of her in Bangkok. In the meantime, steward Tobby, who unsuspectingly smuggled stolen jewels through customs control for a trio of crooks, has to fight off their pursuits. In a rush of opium, he finally throws the jewels into a river. Meanwhile, Chris finally finds his beloved again, who is very cautious when Chris openly confesses his love to her.

While stewardess Susi falls in love with a hotelier and steward Tobby cleverly couples Schneider with stewardess Angelika, the moment of truth suddenly strikes for Chris: he learns of Tamani’s wedding with the prince. Chris gains access to the ceremony and watches the ceremony. Suddenly Tamani's gaze falls on him, and everything around them seems to subside. She surreptitiously shows him that she carried his present in her hands during the entire wedding ritual. But love remains unfulfilled.

additional

Lex Barker got his last film role here in Germany and this only through the commitment of his friend, director Franz Josef Gottlieb. Dietmar Schönherr was originally intended to play the role of flight captain Schneider. Barker, former star of the Karl May films , played for a fee of 60,000 DM.

During the shooting there was a dispute with Lufthansa, which had originally promised the production company its full support. Mainly because of the stupid steward Tobby played by Eddi Arent, the filming permission was withdrawn in a dummy airplane, which is otherwise used for the training of stewardesses. So the film team had to catch up on these recordings in Hanover.

Despite the great effort and many well-done, colorful recordings, the production did not turn out to be the cult film about Roy Black that was hoped for . Its fans had little to do with the leading actress, who was virtually unknown in Germany, and were particularly disappointed with the lack of a happy ending . His critics, however, saw their stereotype of the "Schnulzensänger Black" fully confirmed.

Producer Karl Spiehs allowed himself a cameo as a hotel guest in a deck chair with a blonde falling into his lap .

Reviews

  • “Franz Josef Gottlieb provided colorful, beautiful cinema entertainment . The image of Roy Black as a 'lonely boy' was further expanded and it was successfully pressed onto the lacrimal gland. " ( Filmecho / Filmwoche )
  • "A stupid, sentimental-lying dream product" ( Lexicon of international film )
  • "Really cute: Roy Black as a co-pilot in love who protects a Thai princess." (Heyne Filmlexikon)
  • A routine and attractively turned down strip full of comedy (?), Exotic and (somewhat homely) erotic, in which heart rhymes with pain again and the ideal world of dime novels is propagated. The film doesn't need a recommendation - fans will find it anyway. ( Protestant film observer , review No. 356/1970)
