occupation

Through the wild Kurdistan is a German-Spanish film based on motifs from the novel of the same name by Karl May . The world premiere took place on September 28, 1965 in “Rivoli”, Hanover . The film was continued with Im Reiche des Silber Löwen , another Karl May film , which, however, has nothing to do with the book of the same name.

content

When Ahmed El Corda, son of the Sheikh of Haddedihn, forbade soldiers under the orders of Makhredsch of Mosul to take water from a waterhole in the desert, he was captured after a fight and taken to prison in Burusco. There he is to be executed. Kara Ben Nemsi, who had defeated the dreaded Schut , was honored by the Padisha and actually wants to return to his homeland when he learns of the capture. He sets out with Hajji Halef Omar to free his tribal companions. On the way they meet Sir David Lindsay and his servant Archie, who join the rescue operation. A short time later they are able to ward off an attack by soldiers under the command of Machredsch on the village of the Jesidi . Defeated and thinking of revenge, Machredsch leaves.

In Buruscu Kara Ben Nemsi gains the trust of the commander ( Mütesselin ) of the place, but is lured into a trap by Machredsch. Happy to escape, he can save Ahmed El Corda at the last second. However, shortly afterwards Sir David, Archie and Ingdscha, the daughter of the head of the Chaldeans, as well as their maid Benda fall into the hands of Machredsch. Sheik Mohammed Emin, Ahmed El Corda's father, is shot to death while trying to free her. Sheik Kadir Bei, who had observed the fight, has the troops captured and again Kara Ben Nemsi and his friends are sentenced to death, but this time Ingja and Benda are freed. In pursuit of the Machredsch, the latter falls apparently fatally from a mountain during a fight.

The story continues in " In the realm of the silver lion ".

background

Charles Fawcett plays two roles in this film. After his film death as Sheik Mohammed Emin , he appears a few scenes later as Sheik Kadir Bei .

Fernando Sancho already played in the Karl May films of the 1950s, as Prof. Ignaz Pfotenhauer in “ Die Sklavenkarawane ” (1958) and “ The Lion of Babylon ” (1959).

The two film adaptations Durchs Wilde Kurdistan and In the kingdom of the silver lion led to a legal battle between Lex Barker and the producer Artur Brauner. The original plan was to film only part of the story, and Barker now demanded an additional payment of his fee of DM 100,000. He won the trial.

Brauner had another legal dispute with director Gottlieb after he had resigned from him on June 16, 1965. The protracted arguments ended in 1968 with a settlement.

Raimund Rosenberger played a film score that was rejected by some Karl May fans because of its shrill tones. With the "Lindsay March", however, he managed a catchy catchy tune.

Reviews

Chris Howland played the butler Archie for the second time

“Lex Barker is the superman. He plays his role with relaxed facial expressions and does not lose his indifferent expression when he has a rope around his neck. "

- Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung , September 29, 1965

“The director FJ Gottlieb had more luck with his production than Alfred Vohrer with his film adaptation of Karl May's UNDER VULES. He succeeded in making it more exciting and colorful. The extra series in original Kurdish costumes, the impressive nature shots and, last but not least, the thoroughbred horses keep the eye busy when the action and dialogue are temporarily unable to captivate. "

- Hannoversche Presse , September 29, 1965

"Within the popular and cash-rich Karl May film series, the colorful foray through WILD KURDISTAN is pleasing thanks to its solid craftsmanship, a neat plot that skillfully increases tension, and the discreetly used humor."

- Hannoversche Rundschau, September 29, 1965

“All of this is not bad and has been arranged with a certain amount of effort, but it appears so confused in detail that the viewer leaves the cinema quite unsatisfied. Actually, there is also nothing to report: Lex Barker as Kara Ben Nemsi plays - as always - himself, Ralf Wolter does not play at all as Hajji Halef Omar, the women are purely marginal characters. Dieter Borsche as Lord Linsay and Chris Howland as Archie make an effort - but with only partial success. Werner Peters, on the other hand, delivers a little piece of the art in the role of motherhood (alien to him). "

“This could have been a great Karl May film. Good actors, grandiose desert landscape, splendid effort. [...] The bottom line is that the result is a coarsely knitted sequence of fight scenes without any inner tension. The film has no trace of Karl May romanticism. The music is annoying. The trick balloon scene is at best touching. "

- Michael Petzel in Karl May film book , 1998

"The film adaptation of the Karl May novel of the same name, which follows the original very freely [...] cheerful, adventurous, entertaining food, made according to a common scheme."
